When I was seventeen years old I saw a midnight screening of the The Blair Witch Project in Sarasota, Florida at a tiny indie theater downtown. After leaving the film I went home to a pitch-black, dead-silent house, terrified out of my mind. Although no doubt bolstered by my post-film living arrangements, much of the fear drawn from that film comes from the cinema verite style in which it is shot. Not only are the characters in the film, but you, the viewer are as well, acting as a part of the story by seeing the action unfold through their eyes. It is real horror, and it possesses all the elements to construct a truly terrifying story.

Reading your review (which really makes me want to watch this movie), I was reminded of “Ghostwatch”, a Halloween special that was made by the BBC some years ago. It involves a number of famous British TV personalities as they are doing a ‘live’ broadcast from a supposedly haunted house on Halloween eve. Of course, everything gets horribly out of hand as the evening progresses, but the build-up of the narrative and the way in which live TV is used as a medium are very interesting.
The show caused a furore when it was aired (along the lines of Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds so many years ago) and I think it still works really well. It’s not too difficult to get hold of the DVD (although it’s unfortunately quite pricy…). Might be worth checking out?
Quite excited and a little anxious for it now…!
I actually think they can be physical with us. Not just throw things or open doors. i swear that i’ve been pushed before. hard enough to give me whiplash. i dont know but im scared now.
