On writing about horror.

Through the divine providence of our and Lord and Savior Yog Sothoth and the generosity and kindess of Meh over at Horror-Movies.ca, I am now a feature editorial writer and reviewer for this most illustrious of aggregate horror sites. If you’ll head on over here, you will find that my article (the French Extremity one I posted here a week or two ago) has an astounding eighteen comments already, none of which are negative for some reason. One person actually said my article “belonged in a posh newspaper, in the films section.” Posh, motherfuckers.

It seems this little site, or hopefully my writing in general, has become relatively popular as of late, due mainly to my negative review of Drag Me to Hell. While I may be projecting my own deluded notions of popularity onto something wholly unimportant, knowing that something I wrote is actually being viewed and praised by people of like-minded interests makes me feel all warm and squishy inside. I once wrote a review for the Passion of the Christ as if it were a serious zombie film that defied convention, and it garnered almost five hundred views (give or take) over the course of twenty-hours. The fact that this is due mostly to my submitting it to Reddit notwithstanding, it made me feel special that my barely two month old blog got that many views.

I don’t claim to be an excellent writer. Without the use of an editor my articles and reviews would be riddled with more mistakes than they already have. While I have my education to thank for my approach toward movies (grad school nets you pretty good analytical skills), it’s my love of the genre that allows me to come on here every other day or so and bang out esoteric articles, vitriolic editorials, and, to quote my brother, “hate speech masquerading as reviews.” My writing – and the writing of every other horror blogger out there – is made all the more important and appropriate by the legions of horror fans and bloggers who take a few minutes out of their day to support those who share the same interests they do. That’s what makes the online horror community so wonderful. Though I’m merely reiterating a point made far more eloquently by Day of the Woman proprieter BJ-C, one of the main reasons my writing is even being read is because of the kind, like-minded individuals who share the same unbridled passion as I do for writing and horror. For this I thank each and every one of you who have ever commented on a post, linked to my blog, or simply clicked through to see what all the hubbub is about. Without you I’d be nothing, or quite possibly very discouraged.

  1. Congratulations! I agree, with the young Miss and yourself. The fun of writing within this genre is the discussions and insight you gain from those around you. The diversity of views is an important thing to maintain, which should be respected and encouraged.

  2. Congrats on the new writing gig. You mainstream sell out! I kid. Seriously, you’re French Extreme post and the DMtH review were both top notch and I’m glad the rest of the horror blog pro-am is taking notice.
