Butcher Knives & Body Counts
Vince Liaguno of Slasher Speak sent members of the LOTTD a friendly reminder this morning concerning open submissions for Butcher Knives & Body Counts: Essays on the Formula, Frights, and Fun of the Slasher Film, an in-progress “comprehensive collection of critical essays on the slasher film genre.”
Seeing as how this is precisely what I want to do for a living, I would be a fool to not take advantage of the opportunity to become a published, paid writer. While I imagine most of the book will be dedicated to those with established credits and publications under their belts, one cannot simply overlook the massive online horror community comprised of dedicated and talented writers and all they bring to the table. The fact that Dark Scribe Press is allowing open submissions from anyone to be considered for inclusion in the collection says so much concerning their love of not only the genre, but the contribution the fans themselves make on a day to day basis.
Several months back I wrote a brief article criticizing an author whose full name escapes me (his last name is Crane); his interpretation of Jason Voorhees was so off the mark I couldn’t in good conscience let it slide. If I can’t come up with something else over the next few days, I will most likly retool that and make it less of an invective and more of a starting point for my opinion on the subject.
Is anyone else going to take advantage of this?

This was seen outside a bar I frequent here in Tallahassee. The opposite side echoed the same sentiment, but encouraged people to “act casual.” These conflicting ideas are not going to save lives. Fools.

Go for it. You’ve got the writing chops to make it.
Have you picked a topic yet?
I was thinking of giving it a try myself, but slashers ain’t my bag, so I’d just make a hash of it.
Good luck.
Same, CRwM. I want to give it a go, but I’m not the finest slasher aficionado.
Neither am I, actually. But for the slashers I do like – F13, Nightmare, Halloween – it’s easy to look past the, well, stupidity of most of them to find something a little deeper to discuss. The whole psychology behind Jason Voorhees is fascinating as Hell to me, so I’m most likely going to try and do something related to that, comparing him to the other two (Myers and Krueger), and how each shapes the perception of the film and contributed to their success.
