I'm glad to know someone else out there rightly understands Jesus' resurrection for what it is. However, I would argue that Passion is, in fact, torture porn.

As you say, the film revels in its depictions of torture and pain. As the audience, though we maybe don't share Pilate's enthusiasm for the masochistic display taking place before us, we are subject to Jesus' torture and pain, and, by virtue of this subjugation, we revel in it also. What will happen next? How much more can he take?

The porn aspect of torture porn is not so much about the sex as it is about the watching. Our gaze is focused on Jesus and the humiliation he endures. Whether we ourselves are willing or unwilling participants in this the torture is irrelevant. The camera watches, and we watch too. We watch as the cat-o-nines dig in and tear out his flesh, we watch as the nails penetrate his body, and we watch as he dies exposed and stripped of his humanity.
